OUR STORY

Our story — Off to Bed
Our story

The workshop where bedtime begins.

A short story about beds — and the family that has quietly been making them for twenty years.

I.
2005 · The West Midlands

It started with a bench.

In a small workshop tucked into the West Midlands, a family began making beds. Not the flat-pack sort. The kind you plane by hand, joint with dowels, and finish with a soft cloth. The kind that outlasts a childhood — often two.

Word got around. Before long, some of Britain’s household-name retailers were putting our beds on their shop floors. If you’ve slept in a well-made British bed in the last twenty years, there’s a fair chance you’ve slept on one of ours without ever knowing it. Small world.

For sixteen years, that was our rhythm. We made the beds, someone else put their name on them, and we got on with the next batch.

II.
2021 · A change of heart

Then we had a rethink.

Something shifted during the quiet years. We spent more evenings at home — watching our own children build forts, read under torches, and turn their bedrooms into whole worlds. And it began to dawn on us:

We make beautiful beds for the whole of Britain. But the beds that matter most — the ones a small person will spend a third of their childhood in — deserved a brand of their own.

So we made one. Off to Bed is a children’s-bed workshop that answers its own phone, sells straight to the parent doing the buying, and makes every last bed in the same room where we started — twenty years and thousands of good nights’ sleep ago.

III.
Today · Straight from the makers

Buying from the bedmakers.

We’re the ones building the bed. Not a distributor, not a warehouse in another country. That isn’t sentiment — it’s practical, and you’ll feel it in three specific ways.

i

You pay less.

No retail markup. No six people in the chain. Just the workshop and you.

ii

It arrives sooner.

We build to order. Most beds ship within three weeks and travel from our door to yours — no importer, no boat somewhere off Rotterdam.

iii

You can ring us.

If a slat squeaks, a drawer sticks, or the five-year-old draws on the headboard in Sharpie — the person who answers the phone knows your bed by name.

IV.
Always · The details

The little things we lose sleep over.

We’re a bit obsessed with bedtime. Not just the mattress — the whole thing. Every bed is fussed over, one detail at a time.

  • The height a toddler can climb into unaided.
  • The under-bed drawer deep enough for the dinosaur collection.
  • The headboard soft enough to lean against for a chapter of Roald Dahl.
  • The finish that survives day three’s felt-tip incident.
  • The rail that doesn’t rattle at 2am when someone rolls over.

Beautiful beds, built by hand, at prices that don’t ask you to choose between the bed and the bedding.
